For my passages, even though they are on pages 128-129 I think they are most important to this whole story line and conflict of the book. In these passages Calvin calls the cops and tries to tell them as much as he can without giving away Gretchen's name or her fathers. I feel the frustration of Calvin just reading the words on the page. The Cop does not understand the severity of the situation, the consequences Gretchen will face. Maybe the cop does want to help, but it seems like he does not know how or does not believe what Calvin is saying. Which is hard to believe because this can not be the first situation like this. I think this shows the difficulty of this situation not just in the book but in real life, we go to law enforcement for help with things like this and they do not always seem to help. Any many cases they make things worse. If the cops come to Gretchen's house and leave without her dad, Gretchen is in great danger. This is the obvious conflict in the book, this is what makes Calvin's job so hard. I think this is a serious problem in our world today, how do we know when to believe something like this? When we need to intervene or when cops need to intervene? What is okay punishment and what is abuse? Many of these questions are constantly asked and no answers can really be found. This is why I chose this passage because It leaves a lot of room for discussion and is a problem that needs to be solved.. because people are suffering everyday with no escape.
